Better Beach Photos

The sun on your face, the warm sand between your toes, the sound of waves lapping as you drift in and out of sleep...fewer moments conjure up such warm memories as those spent with friends and family at beach.

And like all unique environments, taking beautiful photos at the beach has its own set of rules and tricks. So before you take out your camera and start snapping away, take a few minutes to read some helpful tips here.

Give Thanks in 2007

Here are some ideas/ traditions for your family this Thanksgiving holiday.

Family traditions are the glue that bind one generation to another. They give children and parents something to look forward to, as well as something to count on during the hectic holiday seasons.  Make your own Thanksgiving family traditions ~ and share them with others.

♦Make a Blessing Basket

♦Tree of Thanks

♦Thanksgiving Notebook

♦Designate a particular tablecloth for your family Thanksgiving celebrations.

♦Show your gratitude to an unsung hero

♦Have children dress up as Pilgrims and Indians

♦Help serve food at a homeless shelter

Family Reunion Activity Ideas
By Darlene Cameron of Arizona

Here are 32 ideas that Darlene came up with as activities at your reunion:

Talent Show. By families, individuals or groups. Include songs, dance, poetry, skits. Either prepare ahead of time or improvise on the spot.

Campfire Singing. Family sing-a-long. Write an annual family song.

Spotlight. Spotlight a family member. Someone who has accomplished something special. For example, Grandma's 90th Birthday.

Recipe Book. Have families bring recipes on 3 by 5 cards and put together, making copies later, or sent ahead of time for books available at gathering.

Genealogy Walk. A few family members research lives of ancestors. Portray events in their lives in a play or skit.

Writing Your Family History

Have you ever wondered how your ancestors lived or what profession they pursued? Do you wonder why no one ever wrote your family's history or an autobiography? Perhaps it's for the same reason you haven't done so.

Questions to Ask when interviewing a family member
* Tell something about each of your children, their persoanlities, their talents, traits, that make them different and special.

* Describe a favorite vacation of you married years.

Drag and Drop Tips
With the recent HM Corporate Drag and Drop and "What's Your Story" webinars, some great tips have been shared with the "Drag and Drop" system of Heritage Studio. Here are a few that are definitely worth sharing!

* Bold Text - To bold text on the Drag and Drop system, make the text in a text box, then duplicate the box. Then, put one text box behind the other but not quite exactly. This affect will make the text look bold.

* View Pages Side by Side - To view pages side by side in a Drag and Drop template, click on the Shopping Cart and select "Complete Project." Even if you are not done with the project, this feature allows you to view the entire project at once. Then, you can go back to continue the project. (Note: At the bottom right of the PDF file - the preview - there are options for the format in which you would like to view the project: side by side, one by one, etc.)

* Duplicate a Page - You have worked so hard on a layout that you love and you want to use it on other pages in your project. Do you have to recreate the entire thing? No! That is one of the great advantages of Heritage Studio - you can save LOTS of time! Since the templates are set with a standard number of pages, you need to first delete a blank page. This is so there will not be an additional cost for adding another page, when you duplicate the page. Then, go to the page you want to duplicate and select "Duplicate Page." This will add a copy of that page to your project and you can edit it however you wish. Hooray!

* Drop Shadow - For a great "drop shadow" affect, go to the "Basic" tab and select the shape that best matches that item that you would like to add a shadow to. Adjust the size of the shape to coordinate with the item and then select the blur tool in the menu. Blur the shape and place it behind your item that you wish to add a shadow to. That's it!
Note: For an added shadowy affect, you can also use the transparency tool in the menu with the shape you select.

Preparing and Planning Your Photos for use in our Heritage Makers Publishing System

The rule of thumb is “great photos uploaded yields great photos printed”. The resolution of your photo is expressed in dpi (dots per inch) or ppi (pixels per inch) and represents the clarity of your photo. The dots/pixels hold the image information of your photo. The more dots/pixels per inch that you have the more precise the information is within the dot/pixel. For best results you want a photo that is 300dpi. The typical 4x6 photo is expressed as 1200x1800 in pixel size. I calculated that by multiplying 4x300 and 6x300.
